ADULT/JUNIOR OPEN

The annual Newburgh-On-Ythan Adult/Junior open greensomes sponsored by Best Wishes was held on Monday 7th May.
A record 102 players took part in the event, which is now in its third year, with competitors travelling from East Kilbride, Brechin, Edzell and most of the clubs in the north-east. Peterhead in particular again provided a large contingent.

The weather was nice and warm with a few showers in the afternoon.  The play was of a very good standard with local players Paul Marshall and Kevin Watson Jnr winning the top prize with a scratch score of 66.  Thanks again to Muriel Duncan of Best Wishes for sponsoring the event.

 ‘KIDDO’ HITS HOLE IN ONE

16 yr old Martin Kidd playing with his Dad and a Peterhead local became a member of the ‘hole in one club’ recently.

Martin playing in the January 07 winter alliance at Peterhead holed his 6-iron tee-shot at the par three 16th hole.

After checking bunkers, and hollows around the large slopping green the Peterhead player suggested Martin checks the hole, as it looked a good shot from the Tee.  Martin laughed as we all have in this situation not giving much hope about the ball actually being there, however, Martin took the advice and was happy to see the ball lying snug in the middle of the hole.

Martin cooly lifted the ball out of the hole and moved on to the next hole.  His dad Steve who has never had an ace looked on astonished before quickly realising he would have to cover the bar bill.

Newburgh junior captain Grant Carnie was given a special presentation after becoming the first golfer in the club’s history to gain an American golf scholarship.

Grant has been awarded a four-year scholarship at Bravard University in North Carolina . Grant will fly out to follow his dream at the beginning of January.

Grant has been a loyal member of Newburgh-On-Ythan since he was 8 years old, Grant has had a particularly good year on the Junior circuit in 2006, finishing second in the North-east order of merit and winning both junior championships at Ellon and Newburgh for two consecutive years.

The former Ellon Academy pupil gave thanks to everyone at Newburgh-On-Ythan Golf Club who has helped him over the years.

All the committee and members of Newburgh golf club wish Grant all the best for the future.

Peter & Pat Low Trophy

Last Monday 11th September the Juniors and Seniors teamed up to play in a greensomes format for the Peter & Pat Low trophy.
Mike Wood from the Seniors was more than happy to put up a strong team of 12 players.
A great night was had by all and this Junior/Senior team event will be repeated next year.
The draw was made and fate would put Jim Warrender with his grandson Neil. Jim said great I can keep a good eye on him.
Jim and Neil played very well apart from two disaster holes.
The pairing of Sandy Paul and Calum Macdonald were favourites, however they found the going tough and surprisingly struggled.
Mike Wood was paired with young Andrew Clements roughly 50 years between them, Andrew had sore shoulders carrying Mike.
The early leaders were Stephen Sharp and Bill Murray shooting an impressive 55 less 9 net 46.
Last year's winner Ruiradh Macdonald paired Monty Swan and thought they had won scoring a fine 55 less 10 net 45.
However, Jim Cattanach was delighted when he paired the ever improving 11 yr old Jack Moir.
Jim and Jack played out of their skins and posted 60 less 15.  After a stewards enquiry Jack and Jim won narrowly on count back.
A small presentation followed with sandwiches kindly supplied by the Seniors.
Many thanks to Mike Wood for organising a senior team at such short notice.
Final results
1. Jack Moir & Jim Cattanach   60 (15)  45
2. Ruiradh Macdonald & Monty Swan  55 (10) 45
3. Steven Sharp & Bill Murray 55 (9) 46

The 100 yard Challenge

The junior members of Newburgh on Ythan Golf Club were given the opportunity to participate in a fundraising event to help boost funds with the promise to benefit both current and future junior members.
Just over £520 was raised and some of this money will be used to upgrade the junior room turning it in to an indoor practice area.
On Monday 21st of August at 9.30 am at the 4 hole course, 22 junior members of various standards were individually positioned 100 yards from a green with the objective to get as many of their 15 balls on that green as possible.
In near perfect conditions the total number of balls to stay on the green was 84 from 330 balls hit.
A prize was given to the sponsor who guessed correctly and the winner was Monica Macdonald.
The junior who raised the most sponsor money was Murray Stevenson raising £68; his prize was a free lesson with Club Professional Ian Brattan.
A Pro-v1 golf ball was up for grabs for the junior to get nearest the pin.
First junior to hit, Grant Carnie lay 2 foot from the pin and looked liked winning until last player Andy Campbell hit his 8th ball to 12inches.
Special mention to Grant who successfully hit 12 balls from 15 on to the green.
Unluckiest Junior had to be Neil Law who after hitting all his 15 balls decided he needed the practice and hit another 5 and with his last ball hit a magic hole in one.  His face lit up like a beacon when the other juniors roared as his ball hit the flag and dropped in.
Neil pleaded with me, does that not count Kevin.  Neil will receive a small prize for his wonder shot.
Many thanks to all the juniors and sponsors who took part.

Kevin Watson, Junior Convenor

THE BUGGY TROPHY

The Buggy Trophy was donated by past member Eric Farr. Eric was a great supporter of the Junior section and for many years provided coaching, and was always seen on a Junior night buzzing around the fairways in his electric 'buggy', hence the name of the Trophy, and giving advice in his quiet way.

18 Juniors, 9 ladies and 9 gents played over the Ist 9-holes (shotgun start).
With the Juniors having won this trophy for the past few years I decided to bring in the 'big guns' for the gents, - Ian Brattan (the club pro) and Ross Mcken (club champion) were keen to post good scores.
However, due to superb play from the juniors and good play from the ladies the men finished in 3rd place.
Ian Mcken (Club captain) proposed that next year the gents will play off the Red Tees and the Juniors play off the White Tees!

Best score posted on the night was from Junior Ryan Riddle who scored an incredible 26 points. (3 over par)
